Private label vs white label — how they differ in supplement manufacturing

The two terms are often used interchangeably, although they describe different models of cooperation with a manufacturer. We explain the difference, the pros and cons, and suggest which to choose depending on your brand's goal.

In short: white label is a ready-made, standard product that many clients sell under their own brands — fast and cheap, but without a differentiator. Private label is a product created or adapted exclusively for one brand: its own formula, form and packaging, more control and a lasting advantage. Onesano works primarily in the private label model.

Definitions of both models

White label means the manufacturer has a ready-made, off-the-shelf product, and different clients sell it under their own brands, usually changing only the label. It is the fastest and cheapest route to market, but the same product may be offered by competitors.

Private label is a product created or substantially adapted for one brand — with an original formula, a chosen form, packaging and labeling. The brand gains control over the composition and a real differentiator, at the cost of a slightly longer and more expensive start.

Which model to choose

The decision depends on the goal. If you want to test a category quickly and cheaply with a standard product, white label may be enough. If you're building a brand for the long term and care about a differentiator — the composition, the form, the product's story — private label gives an advantage that competitors can't copy from the same shelf. In practice, many brands start with private label straight away, because the cost of the difference quickly pays off in loyalty and margin.

It's worth linking this decision to the size of your first batch — we write about that in our article on MOQ in contract manufacturing.

How Onesano works

Onesano operates primarily in the private label model: the R&D department develops customized formulas, and production can also run from raw materials supplied by the client. Thanks to our own unique technologies (Yarrowia lipolytica postbiotics, oil esterification), private label at Onesano can mean a product no other contract manufacturer in Poland will offer. See what the whole process looks like and what shapes the cost.

How does private label differ from white label?

White label is a ready-made, standard product sold under various brands. Private label is a product created or adapted exclusively for one brand — with its own formula, form and packaging.

Which model is better for a new brand?

It depends on the goal. White label works for a quick, cheap market test with a standard product. Private label is better when a brand wants to build a differentiator and a lasting advantage.

Which model does Onesano work in?

Primarily private label — we develop customized formulas and can manufacture from client-supplied raw materials, giving the brand control over composition and form.
